Schools Under Trees; A Serious Disease to Education in Ghana

Despite many efforts by previous governments and current government  to strengthen the structures of Education in Ghana. Many schools in the country most especially, rural areas continue to suffer from schools under tress disease. The Jerry John Rawlings' administration in 2000 established GETFUND with the sole aim of taking care of Educational needs of schools in  the country. However, most schools consistently lack the logistics needed to enhance quality education. Some attributed this to lack of proactivity on the part of our leaders. The current president of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo in his vision sought to improve quality education by allowing all inclusive education thus; Free SHS  to take its course in the country. It was the president's wish that every Ghanaian will attain a minimum level of education, however, if this vision becomes possible, the foundation must be set right in order to achieve it. Here lies the case majority of our basic schools in Ghana are under the roof of the disease "schools under trees".

Joynews in 2021 reported that a total of 2417 schools in Ghana suffer from  schools under trees disease. It was reported that out  of the total 2417, 1167 come from primary schools, 989 are  junior high schools and 261 are kindergartens.

  1. We live to harvest whatever we culture. Given deaf ears to the educational needs of children will not only affect the lives of the upcoming generations but also to the nation at large.
