GHANA: A Stranger In Her Own Land

Again, Ghana has failed to explain why it supports the LGBTQ+ community and whether it should do so as a human right or as a violation of Ghanaian culture. Throughout the long term the contributor nations particularly the US of America has continually be on the neck of Ghana to go with choices concerning what they guarantee to be basic freedoms.

Despite the fact that no legislation to protect Ghanaian citizens from the western lifestyle has been passed since 1992, previous presidents have stated their position on the homosexuality issue. Our leaders have failed to pass a bill in Ghana's parliament that would have prohibited homosexuality in the country due to poor leadership in Ghanaian politics.

Many Ghanaians are deeply disappointed in His Excellency the President, Nana Akuffo Addo, for not responding to questions about his position on the LGBTQ+ community. In the meantime, following Her Excellency the Vice President of the United States' visit, Kamala Harris on Monday 27th March, 2023 made it abundantly clear that she support it as a human right.

"I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting the freedom and supporting the fighting for equality among all people, and that all people be treated equally. I will also say that this is an issue that we consider, and I consider to be a human rights issue, and that will not change."

The president's swift answer has made many Ghanaians believe that the governing NPP is in support of the homosexuality but fears the wrath of Ghanaians, and due to that the bill has not been passed.

"The bill is going through the parliament. The attorney general has found it necessary to speak to the committee (the constitutional and legal committee of parliament) about it regarding the constitutionality ... of several of its provisions. The parliament is dealing with it. At the end of the process, I will come in,"     the president said.

The president's comment has made the speaker of Ghana's parliament, Rt Hon. Abban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin rasied host of reasons why the president has no right to give such comment which he described as undemocratic.

The seat of the president, thus the jubilee House was branded with bizarre colours which many believe to be rainbow colours which represent LGBTQ+. Ghana has become a laughing stalk for past years due to indecisiveness amongst our leaders, and as matter of that any person jeopardizes with our sovereignty. Ghana cannot make decision for herself. Ghana has become  a stranger in her own backyard.
